Early chilhood and young teenage years.
Phillis never spoke of her childhood in Africa. She did however, remember her teenage years. During these years she became more educated, gained to abilities to read and write, became a stong christian, and wrote a book. Her master's wife, Susanna Wheatley, saw that she had the potenial of becoming a great and promising writer. Susanna made her work on her poems and writings more than work around the house. Phillis became Susanna's pride and joy, almost like a niece. Phillis had her own sleeping and eating quarters, never talked with the other help, and as a result was a very lonely teenager. When she was 13 she was baptized at the Old South Church in Boston.
